Great Landscapes of South America Part II

Great Landscapes of South America Part II

As we said in our previous post, here you will find some more spectacular landscapes that you can visit in South America.

Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil

Can a desert be flooded? Yes, if it is the National Park of the Lençois Maranhenses, in Brazil, in the northeast region of the state of Maranhão. Their beauty is one of those that leave them speechless. More in the wet season. That is when hundreds of lagoons of all sizes of bluish or greenish color are formed, surrounded by dunes of white sand. They appear and disappear in a cyclical way every year, constituting a show of amazing beauty.

Los Roques, Venezuela

A small treasure in the form of islands. If you think of a perfect paradise of the Caribbean Sea, it is this: Los Roques, turquoise and calm waters, beaches of fine white sand, coral, and sun. It is an archipelago of Venezuela, in the Caribbean Sea, 168 km north of La Guaira. Its uniqueness and beauty are due in part to the geological formation as they have an atoll structure, more typical of the Pacific than of the Caribbean Sea.

Roraima, the Gran Sabana

Mount Roraima is one of the oldest geological formations on earth. It is part of the chain of the plateaus tepuis (tabular mountains) of the Pacaraima mountain range. Until his summit came Carl, the protagonist of the movie Up, in his flying house. The summit is a plateau surrounded by completely vertical walls of which waterfalls often fall, which makes it somewhat difficult to climb. There is the particularity that there is a point called the triple border, shared by Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil. To arrive above is to find a landscape from another time. However, Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired by the descriptions of this place that made the expeditions of the time to acclimate his novel The Lost World.

Salto Angel, Venezuela

The highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world, with a height of 979 meters and a drop of 807 meters. The falls are inside the Canaima National Park. The Salto Angel was discovered in 1937 by Jimmy Angel. However, the indigenous people of the area, the Pemones, already knew it and baptized it as Churún Merú. Auyantepuy is the largest Tepuy in Canaima, Venezuela, which makes it the highest waterfall in the world. Angel Falls is 15 times higher than Niagara Falls with a total of about 52 meters.

Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina

The Perito Moreno Glacier may not be the most beautiful in the world; but it is spectacular, and, in addition, it is the most easily accessible glacier in the entire planet. It is enough to descend some stairs and their footbridges to meet directly with the great mass of ice that comes from the Southern Patagonian ice field. It is located in front of the peninsula of Magallanes, about 80 km from the town of El Calafate, Argentina. It reaches the lake to a height of 60 meters on average and with surprising blue of very old ice. There can only be one thing that improves your contemplation: to coincide with the phenomenon of rupture, which occurs every four or five years.

Monte Fitz Roy, Patagonia

A mountain that is one of the symbols of Patagonia. It reaches the 3,405 meters of altitude and is located in the eastern Patagonian ice field, on the border between Argentina and Chile. Many mountaineers leave the nearby town of El Chaltén, province of Santa Cruz, Argentina, to reach its summit following one of the most beautiful walks in the world. From the Chilean side, it is reached starting from Villa O'Higgins. The crossing is demanding on a physical level, but reaching the summit, and observing the wonder of the landscape is well worth the effort.

Huaraz, Peru

This is the place of the great snow-capped mountains of the Cordillera Blanca, in Peru, which is part of the Andes. It stretches along 200 km in a northeasterly direction: a spectacle of glaciers, páramos, lakes, and lagoons. If you enjoy hiking and mountaineering, Huaraz is the center. The Huascarán National Park, Biosphere Reserve, is famous for the large snowy massif that gives it its name. Some amazing places that are found in the area are the lagoon of Chinaconcha, the Laguna 69, the Pastoruri Glacier, the Alpamayo. And not only nature but also the ruins of a mysterious civilization: Chavín de Huántar, one of the most important pre-Inca cultures of Peru.
